The most 'normal' portrait lens compatible with the Canon EOS?

I'm new to all this but i'm finally looking for a change in my lens :/ I still own the standard 18-55mm lens and it's not really that nice ><
I have a Canon EOS 500D-> APS-C.

If you want a portrait lens )) go for the 50mm lens. Any wide angle focal lengths (~35mm and bellow) obscure the facial feautures slightly so you end up with slightly elongated noses or chins, etc: which you absolutely dont want.

A focal length of 50mm or over gives you a good scale ratio of the face and it also means that you don't have to stand yards and yards away from your subject, 10 metres away is enough for a medium shot. also the wide aperture (f:1.8) will help give you that blurred background that people like in portraits. I have the 50mm 1.8 II but you could go for the 50mm 1.4 with that sort of budget which would be better since the construction is better and it has a wider aperture.
