Canon Eos Battery Grip

Is it worth it, the Canon EOS 7D Battery Grip?

What is it mostly for, and it is good to have?

It really depends on the individual. The primary reason for a battery grip Canon DSLRs in it allows you to run two batteries and get twice the runtime per battery charge possible. The most common secondary reason is to provide a second set of controls and make the camera more easily in a vertical (aka portait) orientation, this is why some people call use a vertical grip. These two can really important for professionals who may shoot to spend hours or days, without a chance or time to to recharge their batteries. Another reason is simply to the camera a larger and more comfortable grip on the surface. I personally use no battery grip, because I have the weight of my camera and lens to a minimum preferred. I do not feel that I win something, but extra bulk from the addition of a battery Grip on my 7D. The lack of a battery grip also allows my camera to fit into bags that would otherwise not work for the professional models, the 1D/1Ds liike or a standard camera body with a battery grip. The standard capacity batteries work well for me and offer far more capacity than my old 40D. Their use may be different so you need your own decision about whether or not you need to make two batteries. To put it in perspective I shot the Shell Eco Marathon in Houston yesterday and my 7D went through more than 1100 shots (with AF and is based on an EF 70-200mm f/2.8 lens) without a second battery. I had that battery in the camera over a week and used it for a gun class this weekend. After all the applications, the battery is currently showing a shutter count of 1499 with 63% of the remaining capacity is it. Number of photos that would probably at least one battery on my 40D have been necessary. So while I often thought about having a battery grip on my 40D, had not the thought crossed my mind with the 7D.
