Should I keep my SLR camera in my case with the lens on or off?

I have a canon backpack made to hold EOS DSLR cameras. It seems like the dividers in the case are made to keep the lens and body separately. I just dont want to get dust on the sensor when putting the lens on.

Leave the lens attached to the camera body which there won't be any harm done and also would greatly reduce the chances of getting dust on the sensor. Also you won't have to worry about having to put the lens back on for those quick candid shots where seconds counts just to get those shots off.
