What's a good lens for low light photography?
I've got the Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL XS. I'm looking for a lens and/or accessories that help in taking clear, bright pictures in low light settings.
Any suggestions?
When working in low light, you need a "fast" lens (the lower the f/stop number, the "faster" it is). The "faster" a lens is, the better it is in low light situations. A lens of f/2.8 or faster is best for low light. I use lenses that are f/1.4 to f/2.8. The price on lenses tend to follow the aperture size (a f/2.8 will be more expensive than a f/4.0-5.6).
The other thing you could consider is a hot shoe flash like the Canon Speedlite 430EX II or the 580EX II.
I would prefer a "fast" lens before I would a flash, but then I do a lot of low light stuff where a flash is not allowed.
EDIT: What are you shooting?
You will need different lenses for different things. For example...I shoot live action theatrical plays and a 50mm would do me little good, so I use a 70-200 f/2.8L. When I am shooting portraits/pets/bands (close to the stage) , I tend to use the 50mm or 85mm.
