What is the reason for the lower part of the full-frame camera such as Canon 36x24 EOS-1Ds Mark III and Nikon D3S?

I also want to know that this full frame DSLR various Max Resolution (25-12) have MP. So what is the meaning of the resolution? and the grounds on which it depends?. If the meanning the 12MP (4000x3000) is the dimension of the image in mm max? Thank you
