Canon Eos Rebel Xsi 12.2 Megapixel Camera

which lens should i use?

i know just awhile ago i posted a question asking about certain SLR cameras and i believe after research i have decided on the Canon - EOS Digital Rebel XSi 12.2-Megapixel. my question now is what lens should i get for this camera? it comes with the Canon EF-S 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 lens, but im not sure that is what i should be using. i will be using this camera for taking pictures of metal parts ranging from 3 inches to 3 feet. i am pretty sure i am getting a light tent as well. these pictures will be going in the company's catalog and uploaded onto its website. my only question now is if the lens given with the camera will be fine or if i need a different lens. i have been looking at the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens but am not sure if that is what i will need for the size of the parts i will be photographing. PLEASE help me out, i am very new to dSLR's and could use all the help i can get, thanks

For this sort of thing it depends what you want out of the photo. If you're wanting it to be super close-up, that macro lens you are wanting would work well. If you don't care about that necessarily, try out the 50mm F1.8, it's a lot cheaper.

Macro is when what you're photographing practically fills up the frame. It will work better for those smaller-size parts that you need to photograph. But if you don't need 'em filling up every inch of your frame, you don't necessarily need a macro lens.
