What is a good fast lens for shooting in low light?
I have a Canon EOS Rebel T1i. I am leaning towards the PA Carl Zeiss Planar T 1.4/50 but it is a fixed focal length and I'm not sure if this is the best stage for concerts and events. However, I have a big fan Zeiss, since I got my first vintage Rolleiflex with Zeiss lenses. If one of the better Canon lenses for a lower price?
For concert and stage performances F1.4 you will probably not improve the image quality in a Canon lens. And I would hate to give up auto focus in this situation. They are typically either Shooting of large aperture (with little DOF) or too slow a shutter speed (motion blur) due to poor lighting conditions. These are compromises to be to make. Many situations will shoot ISO 1600th They are not the best from each lens. If you want to do II camera, this kind of shooting then a 5D. The low light ability will help you a lot more. And your concerns are valid through the fixed focal length. There is limited. A fast f2.8 zoom is not enough give in very low light, but in a reasonable light (be it always lower than you want), it is much more flexible. See also the Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 for low light to work. You will achieve even more and is very good, open wide on a cropped-format sensor. For concerts, I use 50 and 85mm and 17-55mm f2.8 for a Zoom.
