Best lens for potrait photography...?

I have a Canon eos t1i camera. Towards the end of the summer I am going to be taking peoples senior pictures so I need a good canon lens for potraits.

I'm gonna get stoned to death for this one...but you could get close with a kit lens. You aren't going to have the same sharpness as you get from the high quality optics of the higher end lenses, but what is making those images pop is the concepts, lighting, posing and composition and a relatively decent amount of post processing.

There is no best lens for portraits as far as focal length goes. There is no magical focal length that is "just right" for a portrait even though someone will say undoubtedly say "50mm or 85mm" before I'm finished with this answer. I've seen portraits shot with everything from wide angle lenses to telephoto lenses. It depends on the space you have to work in. Using a longer focal length can actually help you on location because you can compress a busy background. The wider you go, the more that background will be visible.

If you want a decent affordable lens, look for a 50mm 1.8. Like I said above, that's not THE go to portrait lens that people make it out to be, but it is a good starting point and at about $100 it's quite affordable.

Really your question isn't answerable directly...there is no "best". It's all about what you want to achieve really. For the examples you linked to I would say get some lighting and composition knowledge. There isn't a single piece of equipment that goes in your bag that trumps experience and knowledge. With those two you can get great results with almost anything.
