Canon EOS 450D Amateur help!?

Okay so, for my 14th birthday my uncle bought me the Canon EOS 450D (Digital Rebel XSi), 100mm Macro Lens, a 50 mm lens. and two filters. a 58mm filter and a 52 mm filter. So I'm really new to this and I have a couple of questions.

A). If they are clear filters, marked UV or skylight, then they are used principally as protectors for the front lens element - it's cheaper to replace a damaged filter than a broken lens. They also stop finger marks, dust, grit getting on the lens.

B). Yes - it's likely to be a 50mm f1.8 lens. What you mean by bokeh is 'pleasing blur' and this is obtained by a shallow depth of field. You get a shallow dof by having the lens aperture wide open (ie. at f1.8), by being close to the subject or by using a long focal length lens. In this case - the aperture will be the most important factor.

C). Anything that you want to photograph up close & in detail - insects, coins, jewellery.

It sounds like you are new to the concept of photographic exposure - if you want to get the best out of the camera & not use it on Auto everything, then you need to learn about photographic exposure & the factors that control it. A good basic photography course, or a visit to your local camera club will enable you to use the camera to its fullest.
