how to sync ext. mic audio with video from DSLR?

so, just like i said in the title.

i am going to record a video footage with DSLR camera, Canon EOS 500D exactly.

as you know, Canon EOS 500D has a mono mic. and yes, that doesn't really that nice and sensitive in recording a better audio for a better movie.

so, i am planning to buy a recording mic, and going to use them to record in the same time.

and yes, i am still confused on how to make them sync nicely.

The easiest and best way to sync the audio from your recorder with your camera is to use a clapper board (or other visual and noise-making device). When you are ready to begin recording with your Canon 500D and your audio recorder, press the Record buttons on both devices and then hold up the clapper board in front of the camera and slap the clapper to make a "snap" sound (you can slap your bare hands instead) . That sound will be recorded on your camera and on the field recorder at the same time. Later when you open your video in the Time-line of your video editing program, you will add the audio file from your recorder to the audio Track and line up the "snap" sound with the clapper (sound) in the video. The audio in your Time-line will have sound waves and you will see when it peaks at the "snap" sound. Then you can delete the audio portion of the video if you want (the original video will not be effected so you can always start over if you need to).

Save your audio files in .wav format (most recorders do anyway). Wav files are the easiest to work with (edit, etc.). Some recorders save in Mp3 files and some video editors allow you to edit Mp3, but not all.
